With markets in distribution, our Cinco de Mayo webinar focused on current market conditions. We didn’t serve chips and salsa or tequila, just a nice plate of trading education.
We kicked things off with a talk about the current market situation. Volatility is low because this latest 3% correction has been slow. Without much volatility we have less price movement and while options are generally cheap, the futures pricing is not.
Markets, Bonds, Trading and Analysis
This options trading webinar had a strong focus on bonds, prices and ETFs. We introduced bonds along the curve – the SHY, IEF, IEI, TLH and TLT. These cover Treasury names from 1 to 30 years, and I explained how to interpret movements of these ETFs and yields across the curve. (Because bonds are an alternative to stocks, we find investors reaching for them when there is a “risk off” spirit in the air.)
Before we closed the webinar, we covered the emotions and attitudes of trading and how they can rise and fall along with the markets.
This Week’s Market Action
An undercurrent of worry has charts threatening to roll over. Volume has been light, but volatility is rising, which means traders are reaching for protection. Bond yields have been hammered. Gold and silver continue to rise. Despite the bearish action and weak economy, many still believe the Fed is going to pivot toward a June rate hike – and this making the markets even shakier.
