Options Trading Webinar: How To Find Opportunities During Earnings Season
Following the close of each quarter, all publicly traded companies issue earnings reports for the previous quarter – it is commonly referred to as earnings season. Now that Q1 is behind us, we are gearing up for our next earnings season. Are you ready?
During this options trading webinar, we discussed what to expect from upcoming earnings reports and how to find good trading opportunities no matter what happens during earnings season. For all of you playing along at home, you know that Q1 was scary this year. Right out of the gate, the markets dropped – and they kept dropping right into mid-February. The sellers were out in force, and it seemed there was no stopping them. But then March came along. Sellers were exhausted, so buyers jumped in – and the markets finally started moving up into positive territory.
This week, we saw some pullback – and that is likely because earnings season is around the corner. Sell signals and red flags have started to pop up, so we talked about adding some put plays. The audience asked a lot of great questions about adding some layers of protection via puts. While they can be a drag on performance, it will help us weather the storm.
We ended the session with a brisk lightning round of stock chart analysis.
This Week’s Market Action
The VIX is on the rise and breadth has been really bad, probably because buyers have exhausted themselves. When this happens in a bear market, heavy selling typically ensues – so keep your eyes peeled. Puts/calls were elevated again as well, further evidence that the market is worried about the complacent attitude. And to add fuel to the fire, we have the Fed Governors fueling speculation.
