Once again, the noise from the media and talking heads is deafening. With 2016 off to a rocky start, doomsday scenarios were crowding the airwaves. Then the markets started picking up mid February. Even though we are still in a bear market, the bulls are getting feisty – turn on CNBC, and you’ll hear them. As traders, the only way we can stay focused is to listen to the markets – and that’s been pretty tough to do.

During this options trading webinar, we talked about the wacky market behavior and how it seems there is little rhythm to guide us. That is subject to change of course, given the fact volatility is starting to pick up. The very strong run we’ve been enjoying may be starting to wane, and that is okay. We could use a pause and refresh. The oscillators are still hot but below recent highs, put/calls are low, and the VIX is getting jumpy again. We are still in a bear market until further notice; this is no time to be complacent.
The latter part of the webinar we talked about how to turn down the noise. Distractions are everywhere, but the truth may only be told by the charts and price action. They will set you on the right path.
This Week’s Market Action
February’s rally is stalling out. Given its strength, power, breadth and leadership, giveback was imminent. The McClellan oscillator fell sharply on Tuesday from extremely elevated levels. Breadth was also horrendous, puts and calls raced lower, and the VIX also went lower. As a result, put protection was bought up aggressively.
