Webinar Recap: Options Trading Strategies for Summer Trading When the Markets Are Feeling Shaky
If the dog days of summer were starting to lull you into complacency, this week served as a sharp wake up call. During typical years, trading in July and August basically floats along. Company’s have no news to share and everyone is relaxing on holiday.
This week started out with a bang as Greece closed all banks for the entire week, which, of course, panicked the markets. The crisis is not over yet, so today I went over some options trading strategies you can use whenever the markets are shaky – like now. Despite some market upheaval, we still managed to find some daylight. However, the big surge in volatility is taking its toll. The “unknown” result from the upcoming Sunday referendum has everyone feeling doubtful, and we soon embark on earnings season, which will throw even more uncertainty out there.
We talked about gathering protection when complacency kicks in; that happened recently with the VIX hitting 12%. Monday saw a huge snap move higher, the 11th biggest move on record for the VIX. More moves may be coming soon. The chart of the SPX 500 and especially the Russell 2K is teetering, and because this is summer, it’ll be tough to overcome recent heavy distribution, aka, institutional selling.
Market Action
Of course, we spent quite a bit of time talking about Greece, but I also highlighted some new trade ideas and reviewed my chart of the week, AMC Entertainment.
Bob Lang discusses the markets, top options trading strategies, charts and technicals, and take questions:
